The most traditional method of laying screed is mixing the cement and sand on the spot using a mixer. However due to the heavy work involved in mixing the screed it has led to an increasing shift to using ready-mixed screeds.

The finished product should be more smooth and workable than ordinary concrete. It should also have enough concrete to keep it in place and prevent it from becoming cracked further down the road.

Screed is a great option to apply as a smooth finish to new floors, or used to level the floors of existing ones. The screed is composed of one part of cement and four parts water. It is usually applied using a straight edge or a plastic or wooden floating and then finished using trowels or a power-float.

In order to allow flooring to air dry, you must allow a weeks of dry time for each centimetre based on how deep the layer of screed.

For a thickness of screed that is greater than 5 centimetres, however it is best to leave a bit more. After the screed has been left to fully dry it is now time to begin to lay the flooring over it.
